Comments Living in Bangkok has pretty much limited my diving to Thailand during the pandemic.

Last November, I spent a week in Koh Tao. It was very nearly deserted. I was the only guest in the hotel and the only customer the dive operator had all month. Underwater visibility was generally fair, although poor at one site. Capping the week, the high-speed ferry from Chumpon only operated on an irregular schedule, leading to much wasted time.

Not wanting to repeat that experience, I went to Chumpon this past March (Chumpon is the mainland nearest Koh Tao). It was a very pleasant week. The beach is only about a ten minute drive from Chumpon airport. We stayed at the best place on the beach, the Nana Beach Hotel - four nights in a private bungalow with king size bed, full air con, cable TV, outdoor shower and daily breakfast was only Thai Baht 7,000 (about USD 220).

The dive operator we used, Chumpon Divers, is just down the beach and pretty well organized. Their charges are about half that of other operators elsewhere. The full day of diving was Thai Baht 2,400 (about USD 75). Some days we did two dives, other days three dives - the price per day stayed the same, and includes a modest lunch on board the boat.s

Diving off Chumpon is usually around the Chumpon Pinnacles, a series of smallish offshore volcanic islands with surrounding reefs that offer, by far, the best diving in the Gulf of Thailand. Lots of healthy hard corals, with some soft corals; lots of reef fish plus the occasional whale shark if you're lucky.

Underwater visibility is generally good to excellent. The Pinnacles are uninhabited (other than the occasional, temporary, birds-nest gathers) so there is no sewage or other pollutant run-off. They form the main features of a National Marine Park which is well patrolled (there's a small fee to be paid every few days or so, for Park access).

English is widely spoken in and around Chumpon - often more than in Bangkok - because most of the restaurant, hotel and shop employees are Burmese for whom English is nearly a first language.

If you're looking for a very pleasant dive experience in the Gulf of Thailand, far less expensive than elsewhere, and don't feel like putting up with the ups and downs and other difficulties of Koh Tao, I highly recommend Chumpon. You can fly there direct from Bangkok and the beach is only a few minutes from the airport.
