Comments I regularly travel to the south east part of mainland PR (Palmas Del Mar) to visit family and do a little diving. I've logged 200+ dives all over mainland PR but I have grown frustrated by the absence of dive operators in/around Palmas. The nearest shops are clustered around Fajardo where the diving is disappointing.....so, on this trip I decided to take the 8 minute flight from Ceiba (just south of Fajardo on the mainland) to Vieques ($36/each way) and dive w/Isla Nena Scuba. The short/ low altitude flight (under 1000') allows for diving/flying on the same day. I called a week in advance and discussed the details w/owner/operator Arnuad. All went to plan: Arnuad's wife, Tania met me at the fisherman's pier and led our small five person dive group. This was a drift dive w/the small boat following overhead. Very relaxing dives w/good visibility and healthy corals/marine life. Saw several roughtail southern sting rays, one 6' nurse shark many schools of snappers & grunts along with ~half dozen lionfish. I brought along my spear and dispatched seven on the 2 tank dive. We returned to the dock & switched tanks and completed the second dive--equally enjoyable. Interestingly, most of mainland PR had been operating under small craft advisories for almost two full weeks, but the southern shore of Vieques was quite calm. Tiana (a German national)even offered me a ride back to the airport and showed me how to make a shandy (one 12 oz beer w/6 oz of 7UP). I plan to regularly dive w/Isla Nena Scuba on all future trips to PR.
